Mailboxes handle a lot of wear and tear due to weather and daily use. As a result, mailbox doors can loosen and fail to shut over a period of time. This is a problem for potential mail and identity theft but also for rain and snow elements making their way into the box and thusly into your mail.
If a loose mailbox door is your problem and your mailbox is made of steel or sheet metal, it’s an easy fix. Unfortunately, if you own a plastic mailbox, you won’t be able to make an easy repair.
Here are some ideas that Estes Designs suggests to repair and/or tighten your mailbox door quickly and easily.
Open the mailbox door, and use small pliers to bend the top hasp on the mailbox up toward the top of the door just slightly. This should increase the friction between the hasp on the top of the mailbox and the mailbox door itself. Close the mailbox door and make sure the door closes tightly.
Open the mailbox door and attempt to bend it back into place. Straighten out the metal front and use your hands to bend the metal edges inward as to ensure a secure fit around the mailbox frame when the door closes.
Realign and retighten the hinges to adjust the door to fit around the mailbox frame.
If you find yourself in a pinch and can’t repair the mailbox door for whatever reason, call Estes Designs at (317) 899-5556 and talk to one of our professional staff members. We can talk you through a repair, or make arrangements for a new box to be installed.
